Something that has been on my mind
all week is professional football. This Sunday when most NFL teams play a game,
there are multiple events I am looking to watch for. I am interested to see if the
players will stand during our national anthem, but looking most forward to
watching the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders matchup.
During the past few weeks, there
has been a big political debate whether players should have to stand up for the
National Anthem. This occurrence has been going on during the NFL for the past
year to bring attention to police brutality towards African Americans. However,
during the past two weeks Donald Trump has heated up the topic by calling the
players who don’t stand up “Son of a bitch” and said they should not be allowed
to play in the NFL. I don’t believe the president should have voiced his
opinion in the manner that he did, but I do believe the message he is trying to
convey. I think that not standing during our anthem shows disrespect to the
country which brought all these players great success and opportunity in life
that they wouldn’t have received in any other country. It is also a disrespect
for the people who fought and died for our country, and presently some veterans
do play in the league. For example, one veteran who is a part of the Pittsburg
Steelers was the only player to stand up for the anthem while his whole team
decided to stay in the locker room leaving him alone on the field. In my
opinion this just didn’t show disrespect to the country, but also for their own
teammate who their coach called a “family” that would make decisions as one. Overall,
I am not someone who likes to take part in political debates, and as an NFL fan
I would like to see the league stay away from politics in the future.
Stepping away from politics, I am
most interested to watch the Denver Broncos game since they are my favorite
team. This week’s matchup is an important and exciting one as both team are in
the same division and hold a winning record. The Broncos have the best defense
in the NFL, while the Raiders have one of the best offenses. At the end of the
day, the Broncos will be the victors of the two purely because of the home
field advantage.
I have also been following this public debate lately. While many people have taken sides, I find it easier to understand the NFL players' motives. Trump did not fully explain his thought on the matter while lashing out via social media, but many people who side with the NFL players who do not stand have explained themselves and made their point: more attention is being brought to the matter.
ReplyDeleteI usually don't get into political debates either, but I also agree that sports (and entertainment) and politics should stay away from each other, to an extent. I think it's fine for them to voice their own opinions about certain causes. However, they should most certainly stay away from each other when there is a needless politicization of sports (and entertainment) in situations where there is no political context.
