My Life on the Road (Post #1)
Although I have only read the first two chapters of the
book, I find it to be much more interesting than Growing a Farmer. Both books
are memoirs, and although it is hard for me to relate to both authors stories,
Gloria Steinem’s work is a much more fascinating read. So far in the beginning chapters
of the book, Steinem gives an introduction about her early family life and the
significant amount of time her family spent traveling during her childhood.
What fascinated me most about her families traveling was in the way which they
would go about it. Steinem explained that her father would never start their
family trip with enough money to get to their destination. Instead, the family with
even her nine-year-old sister would buy and sell antiques, gold, and silver to
make enough money to continue traveling. Furthermore, she mentioned that her
sister would enroll in a High-School in places that her family would travel
too.
Steinem also shared a lot of personal family information in
the first chapter that I appreciated, and made me get a better understanding of
the author. She had shared detailed recounts of her parent’s separation and the
difficulty of taking care of her mother while going about her own life. In my
own personal life, I cannot relate to what the author’s childhood. However,
since I love to travel when I can, this book has kept me captivated unlike
Growing the Farmer. I am excited to read the rest of the book as I am sure
there will be a lot more interesting stories about her young adult life while
she had been traveling.
